At a tender age, I made a great decision to put my past aside and learn to live life without regrets.
Yes, it wasn’t easy. I always fell into one form of mess or the other. And, I had a thousand and one reasons to regret.
The words, “if only,” “how I wish,” “if I had,” weren’t far from my mouth. But, No! I didn’t spill them.
I discovered that regrets bring no joy–but pain, tears, and worries. It makes one see one’s world as “over” and one’s opportunity as “wasted.” It also makes one see the words, “second chance” as unreachable.
I’ve once had cause to regret, and so have you. But, what did you gain after the wasted minutes of sad memories? Was starving yourself of your precious meal worth it? Or, did your tears wipe off the errors you wish were done right?
Come off it!!
Regrets only prevent us from seeing the greater opportunity that lies ahead.
“Live in the present tense, facing the duty at hand without regret for the past…” – William de Witt Hyde
There are hundreds of hurdles ahead. Why standing at a spot and crying because you got bruised by a hurdle you slightly hit? As long as the race isn’t over yet, you have to keep pushing forward.
Why should you learn to live life without regrets?
It’s simple. You aren’t perfect. And because you aren’t superhuman, you will repeatedly fall into situations that will cause you to regret.
So, are you going to let the feeling of regret take a complete charge over your life?
“We must all suffer one or two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret or disappointment.” – Jim Rohn
Instead of ripping your head off, it’ll be a great gain if you work now towards avoiding things that will give you a load of reasons to regret later on.
Words like “if only” can be avoided if you begin to do what’s right. You are presently regretting the things you couldn’t do years back, or did (but in a wrong way).
And in days, weeks, or years from now, you might end up regretting moments of joy you didn’t share in, or vital actions you didn’t take now.
Therefore, now is the time to structure your life in a regret-free pattern. The time to work towards achieving your dreams so the words “if only” will remain mere words, and not words to begin a statement of your life experiences.
Now is also the time to share pies and cakes with your loved ones and the ones that care about you.
Structuring your life in a regret-free pattern is very achievable. But, it can only be made possible if you begin to “do the things you will wish (tomorrow) you had done today.”
Below are seven things to do now, to end up living a life free of regrets.
How to live life without regrets
1. Plan Your Life
One great mistake a man can ever make is to live each day as it comes.
What exactly do you intend to make of your life? It’s time to decide.
If you keep on doing things because you feel like doing them, not because they’ll in any way add value to your life, then you might end up with a life full of regrets.
Here is an assignment for you. Ask yourself the following questions:
What height do I plan to get to?
How do I intend to reach this height?
When will I begin to work towards attaining this height?
With the answer to the last question being NOW (or today) and the answers to the first two questions wisely determined by you, you will end up with a life without regrets.
2. Spend Time with Those You Love
Distance, death, and misunderstanding are three factors that can separate you from the ones you love.
Today, they are still around you. You still have the opportunity to spend time together, and share doughnuts and ice cream. You can still pick up your mobile phone, dial their numbers and hear their soft voice with welcoming words like, “Hi darling, hope you’re doing great.”
But, this won’t last forever. Time would come when their numbers won’t be reached anymore, and their voices won’t be heard.
Sounds scary? Shouldn’t be! It will happen to us all, someday.
But, there is still an opportunity today to spend quality time with those who loves you.

3. Face Your Fears
They’re only taking a nap but aren’t dead. If you keep housing your fears, in months from now, you may wish you’d kicked them today.
Now, you can still fight your fears. The fear of failure (being the most common), won’t let you go until it makes you a “dream waster.”
Yes! That’s what I call those who sees an opportunity to turn their dreams into reality but shy away–like cowards–due to the fear of failure.
“How can one fight these fears?” You may ask.
And my simple answer will be, “by taking a step now!”
“The price of fear is often regret for what could have been.” – Brian Cagney
4. Grab That Opportunity
A popular saying goes thus, “opportunity comes, but once.” Although, I don’t completely agree with the idea, yet it makes sense when analyzed.
Do you have an opportunity to explore, learn, love, or give? Then make the best out of it.
Always remind yourself that the opportunity may not return once it passes you by. Ten years from now, you might regret not taking advantage of the opportunity you once had.
You sure wish to live life without regrets, right?. So, grab that opportunity!
5. Do It Now
Time may pretend to be a good friend now, but will definitely deny you when you get off your balance.Time may pretend to be a good friend now, but will definitely deny you when you get off your balanceClick To Tweet
Putting off till tomorrow what you ought to do today is like adding an inflammable substance to burning coal.
And, the result? It burns even more (instead of quenching).
Bringing it to our everyday life, the more the delay, the farther your dream gets.
Your future is at stake here. You don’t wish to look back and tell yourself “if only…” right? Then do it now!
Do what is right. Do what you are certain will make your tomorrow dazzle. Do what you know your unborn kids (and grandkids) will see and be proud of. Do what the entire nation will end up celebrating you for.
No time is right, just start today!
6. Impact Lives
Many years from now, you may wish you had affected that life today.
Often, I’ve heard people say, “The greatest investment a man can ever make is in the life of others.”
Help others become better.
Help others become great.
Help others have a reason to smile.
Is it in your power to affect lives today? Then consider yourself privileged. Many people out there seek the opportunity you have. But, what would differentiate you from them is how good–and swift–you’ll use this opportunity.
Is there a toddler next door you feel you can place on a scholarship? Then do it!
By helping others, I always become even happier (I guess it’s same with you too). Seeing the person you helped yesterday in a great height today, will definitely make you feel proud–and fulfilled.
7. Give Value to Learning
We are in an era where the value of knowledge can’t be over-emphasized. Do you have an opportunity to gain more knowledge? Then be swift to grab it!
No knowledge, they say, is a waste. If it requires you to be humble, be humble. If it requires you to spend a token, then put in your resources. If it requires you to put in energy, then give it your best.
The knowledge you gain today might just be the key to your success in the nearest future.
